I walked the streets like a mind without a soul
I saw your eyes in the windows of St. Catherine's as they closed
And every hand I could reach for pulled away
It felt like freedom from the fall out on Independence Day
My legs gave out and I came down on my knees
The city shook me and my heart said, "baby, spin me slower please"
From somewhere far, far beneath the surface came
A voice of comfort and a song that somehow seemed to know my name
I'm gonna' be the last man standing, I'm gonna' look beyond these words
I'm gonna' blow the roof wide open, I'm gonna' tell the whole world what I heard
Stronger than a million countries, deeper than an ocean floor
Tell me can you feel this, baby, I'm gonna' give you what you're waiting for
Forget the times when you walked out on me
Let go of all your faded stories of the way we used to be
Give the morning sun a chance to make you smile
After all, the sky is clear now, and it should be for awhile
Remember sitting in the shade of an apple tree?
Fourteen steps from Euclid Avenue to the place we liked to eat
A hundred men with broken hearts can say the same
But I know deep inside your mind, you're still spelling out my name
I'm gonna' be the last man standing, I'm gonna' look beyond your words
I'm gonna' blow the roof wide open, I'm gonna' tell the whole world what I've heard
Stronger than a million countries, deeper than an ocean floor
Tell me can you feel that, baby, I'm gonna' give you what you're waiting for
Give me peace, give me patience with myself
Let me see the best intentions of everybody else
And when it's time to put my fingers to the flame
Give my purpose, give me presence, give me passion in your name
I'm gonna' be the last man standing, I'm gonna' make you eat your words
I'm gonna' blow the roof wide open, I'm gonna' tell the whole world what we heard
Stronger than a million countries, deeper than an ocean floor
Tell me can you feel this, baby, I'm gonna' give you what you're waiting for

You say you're ready to love me
and there's nothing that I want more
Than to pull the shades, turn off the phone, put down the bottle
and unlock the door
It's the light barely reaching your shoulders
and the dark just behind your neck
You're the perfect example of a painting
but inside you're a wreck
So am I...oh, so am I
And you came here tonight thinking I just might let you in
So am I...yeah, so am I
I've got 28 reasons not to love you, but my head's getting thin
Do you remember one Sunday morning
when you woke up alone
And you drove across town with hot coffee and a smile
but you should have known
When you found me the snow was still falling
you were shining and I had the shakes
I'd give all the whiskey in the world for you to see
you're still making the same mistakes
So am I - Lord, so am I
I'm half crazy, but my other half is wiser than it's ever been
So am I - oh, so am I
I've got 28 reasons not to love you, but I'm thinking again
So am I, so am I
It's been 3 years since I've seen you, baby where've you been?
So am I, so am I
I've got 28 reasons not to love you, but forget about them
I've got 28 reasons not to love you...baby come back again

Charlie works down at the corner store, he sees a lot of faces
He can't go anywhere without running 'cross a friend, even in the strangest places
He knows more than he lets on about the lives of everyone
But at the end of the day, all he can do is pray
Charlie tells a story about a man named Tom who died before he shoulda'
Tom spent every day sitting in a bottle, woulda' saved him if he coulda'
So charlie tries to crack a smile when Tommy's mom walks down the aisle
But at the end of the day, all he can do is pray
There's a girl named Mary, and she broke charlie's heart, left without a letter
Took a month or two 'til he could look at me straight and say Jim, I'm doing better
He says he wonders what went wrong and if she knew it all along
But at the end of the day, all he can do is pray
I met Charlie a couple years ago don't know much about his past
Every morning, he reminds me not to waste it 'cuz the days go by so fast
It's not hard to recognize there's a distance in his eyes
But at the end of the day, all I can do is pray
